Sean Boehm is a licensed independent insurance agent based in California, also licensed in 27 additional states. He specializes in providing comprehensive health insurance solutions for individuals at every stage of life, from newborns to seniors entering Medicare - helping clients understand and navigate all of their available options.
Sean has been married for 13 years and has three children and a dog. Sean and his wife were both born and raised in Whittier, California. Recently, he co-founded an agency with two friends, where they continue their work as independent agents while also recruiting and training others to succeed in the industry.
Sean is passionate about what he does, as it allows him to guide people through the often complex and frustrating health insurance landscape, while also maintaining the flexibility to be present for his family.
Q: How long have you been an independent health insurance agent?
A: I have been an independent health insurance agent for 6 years.
Q: What was the first job you ever had?
A: I was actually hired by two places that I applied for in the same day in high school - Game Stop and Dr. Java/Bright Plaza Pharmacy.
Q: What is the most satisfying aspect of your work?
A: The most satisfying aspect of my work is knowing people have peace of mind when I leave. Education is my number one priority for my clients that are going into Covered California or Medicare. Hearing that they feel so much better and have peace about something they were initially so overwhelmed with is very satisfying.
Q: Explain what you do in five words or less.
A: Health insurance made simple.
Q: What money (or career) advice do you wish you could give your 18-year-old self?
A: You don't need to go to college to be successful. Also, invest in Bitcoin as soon as it's available.
Q: Name one thing about your job that most people would be surprised to hear.
A: All of my services are FREE. Most people don't know that about health insurance agents. There is no cost for my services and no extra cost from the insurance companies. You get a free health insurance advocate for Medicare and Covered CA. What does that mean? Co-pay issues? Call Sean. Referral issues? Call Sean. Premium seems incorrect? Call Sean. It's more than just signing you up and finding the appropriate plan, it's being your advocate.
Q: Where do you see your industry heading in the next 10 years?
A: It's hard to say because there have been a lot of cuts and changes made in the last 3 years, specifically for Medicare. That being said, I see it going in a positive direction as people come to understand and know that there are local insurance agents there to be their advocate.
Q: If you could give your clients only one piece of advice what would it be?
A: This is directed at the Medicare side - NEVER give your Medicare ID to anyone over the phone that is not from your doctor's office. Call centers will try to scam you and switch your Medicare plan. They will try confusing you and intimidating you. Always hang up.
Q: What big projects do you have coming up in the next 12 months either personally or professionally?
A: Our agency is looking to expand our footprint into Nevada in the next few months! I am licensed to sell in 27 states personally, but as an agency we are always looking to partner with medical groups and doctors in other states to ensure that their patients are getting the best plan possible.
Q: Why should someone choose a CPA instead of doing their own work?
A: I do not know taxes and I do not want the government in my business more than they need to be. That's why I use Chris to do all of my taxes. He knows the laws and what is allowed. Using a CPA, like Chris, is an extremely worthwhile investment for me and my family.
Q: Why should someone choose an Independent Insurance Agent instead of doing it themselves?
A: Health Insurance can be confusing. There are a lot of plan options. Within the plans, there are specific doctors or medical groups that each plan is also contracted with. Within that, there could be a disconnect from your primary doctor and your specialist or even the hospital you want to go to. Having an insurance agent ensures that you don't have to research any of that and you have clear, concise explanations of your benefits when you need it, coming from someone you have met and know.
Q: The mountains, the beach, or the desert?
A: The mountains. Wherever there is a lake or stream, I'm all in.
Q: What other interests/hobbies are you passionate about?
A: I am passionate about my faith in Jesus. I love hearing people's backgrounds and why they do or don't believe - and discussing it. One hobby I have is collecting and refurbishing old video games. I am a huge Nintendo fan, so I have a large collection. I also fix broken games or systems so they can still be enjoyed by people. You'd be surprised how durable all of the older systems are - and they are pretty easy to fix.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you?
A: For all of my jobs, I have had one thing that keeps me focused on why I do what I do and that is Colossians 3:23, "Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord and not for people..." For every person I have the privilege to assist, it is always my best foot forward to ensure they get the best support possible.
