Why You Should Get an IRS Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN)

Tax fraud is a growing concern for individuals and families across the country. One of the simplest and most effective ways to protect yourself is by getting an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) from the IRS.

If you're not familiar with this tool, here’s what you need to know—and why I strongly recommend it for all of my tax clients.

What Is an IP PIN?

An Identity Protection PIN is a six-digit number assigned to you by the IRS that helps prevent someone else from filing a tax return using your Social Security Number. It acts as a special layer of security that only you (and the IRS) know.

Each year, the IP PIN changes and is required when you file your federal tax return.

Why Should You Get an IP PIN?

Here are the key reasons:

  1. Prevent Tax-Related Identity Theft
If someone has your Social Security number, they could potentially file a fraudulent tax return and claim your refund. The IP PIN blocks this—returns without your current PIN are automatically rejected.
  2. Peace of Mind
Even if you’ve never been a victim of identity theft, having an IP PIN adds a proactive layer of defense. With tax-related scams on the rise, it's a smart move.
  3. Easy and Free
Getting an IP PIN is free, and the process is simple to complete online through the IRS.

Who Can Get One?

Originally, IP PINs were only available to confirmed identity theft victims, but now anyone can voluntarily opt in.

If you file a federal tax return and can verify your identity, you're eligible.

How to Get Your IP PIN

Here’s how to apply:

Step 1: Create or Log In to Your IRS Account

  • Go to https://www.irs.gov/ippin
  • Click “Get an IP PIN”
  • You’ll be prompted to sign in or create an ID.me account for identity verification

Step 2: Verify Your Identity

You may be asked to provide:

  • A photo ID (driver’s license, passport, etc.)
  • A selfie or video call for identity verification
  • Your Social Security Number and other personal information

Step 3: Receive Your PIN

Once verified, you’ll receive your current-year IP PIN immediately. Be sure to store it securely—you’ll need it to file your tax return.

Important Tips

  • The IP PIN is valid for one calendar year and changes each January.
  • Never share your PIN with anyone other than your trusted tax professional.
  • If you lose your IP PIN, you can retrieve it online through your IRS account.

Tax identity theft is frustrating, time-consuming, and potentially costly. Taking just a few minutes to get your IRS IP PIN can save you from months of stress later.
