The IRS has announced that for 2024, individuals aged 70½ and older can make tax-free charitable donations of up to $105,000 through qualified charitable distributions (QCDs) from their IRAs, up from $100,000 in previous years. For those aged 73 or older, QCDs also count toward the required minimum distribution (RMD) for the year.
QCDs are tax-free if sent directly from the IRA to a qualified charity. To take advantage of this for 2024, IRA owners should contact their IRA trustee soon to ensure the transaction is completed by year-end. Each eligible IRA owner can exclude up to $105,000 in QCDs from taxable income. Married couples, with separate IRAs, can donate up to $210,000 combined, as long as both qualify.
Starting in 2024, the QCD limit will be adjusted annually for inflation. For 2025, the limit will rise to $108,000.
For tax reporting, QCDs should be included on your 2024 tax return. Your IRA trustee will send a Form 1099-R in early 2025, showing the IRA distribution details. Be sure to get written confirmation from the charity showing the donation amount, date, and that no goods or services were received in exchange.
